Introduction

It's Thursday which means... 40K LIVESTREAM! can I hear a whoop whoop!

Sorry for missing last week's post, work got the better of me but don't worry I am back to give you a sneak peek at the Livestream coming up tonight for your viewing pleasure.

Lets meet the Players:

John aka The Preacher: Hello my name is John but people call me 'The Preacher'. I have been playing 40k since I was 14 when I used to play with my best friend in his front room. I love playing competitively and you will see me around on the tournament circuit, although not as much as I would like these days. Today I am playing Iron Hands, it's an army I love, they have been in the cabinet for over a year now, but something it telling me that now might just be the time to bring them out again.

Davey: Hi I'm Dave, I LOVE 40k it is such a good game. I play Tyranids almost exclusively it’s fair to say Tyranids ‘overran’ too close to the sun. We’ve had it too good for too long and the nerf hammer hit us with an almighty clang. It hit the units we expected… and some units we didn’t expect. My list went up circa 400 points and, as much as I’d like to, opponents won’t let me use it again.

Do I drop the faction? Hell no. I’m flipping the carcass over and looking for the remaining nuggets of meta-munching biomass (I’m writing this hungry, apologies). Luckily, our codex came out with Toby Carvery levels of meat. However, I’ve already had 2 plates full of the good stuff… and the staff are starting to look worried; there’s not a lot left on the buffet.

Commentating today we have 2 players which need no introduction 'Big D' (Darren) and the one and only 'The BRAIN!' (Alex).

Mission

We are back using the new Arks of Omen mission pack and are playing mission 11, Recover The Relics.

The mission has not changed in the new tournament pack so everyone is nice and familiar.

Sorry about the quality of the image there... rubbish camera! This mission is very interesting players need to hold 1 objective for 4pts, 2 for 8pts and more for 12pts. Both players have access to 3 objectives near their deployment zone, so we should see a very even and high-scoring primary.

One thing to note is how each player gets a CP each player turn... you have to be holding an objective in no-mans land... this should be straightforward... but in the first turn Dave cannot deploy outside his deployment zone with his units, which means in that first battle round he might not get any CP whereas John can with his infiltrator's... will those 1/2CP make a difference we will have to wait and see.

This battle will come down to the secondary choices of the players.

Davey: One of the remaining mouth-watering morsels, sat untouched towards the back of the hot-plate, is Hive Fleet Gorgon. Who? Exactly. Gorgon is a Hive Fleet in the Tyranid Codex. It’s all about poison – that means they always wound on 4+, except against vehicles and titanic monsters. They also love toxin sacs with a strat to auto wound on 5s – I hear that’s all the rage nowadays.

The meta was recently ‘marked safe’ from the Flying Hive Tyrants doing the hokey-cokey across the board. To make things even worse, we now have armies of power armoured chads running/shooting at us – with their hearts set on revenge for the last 11 months of 2-3 tournament results.

While everything previous thought of as “good” is more expensive, we have a lot of spikey, eaty, stabby, slashing bits that power armour really doesn’t like. Genestealers and Tyrant Guard can now get through ‘armour of non-tempt’, while exocrines can leave huge holes where entire squads of aggressors and eradicators used to be.

Admittedly, I am a Tyranid player with a belly full of kill-secondaries from the last 11 months. Like someone who has eaten too much Toby Carvery however, I’m going to have to work hard to do anything moving forward.

This is especially true as GW have given all my power armoured foes the points that they have taken from Tyranids. The meta change in these two armies is incredible – marines have gone from the hunted to the hunter while our soft underbelly is there for all to see. I genuinely hope for a competitive game with a reasonable score, but like my hair line, I may be clutching at straws.

Preacher: Well how the tables have turned, a month ago this match up would have been very one-sided and not in my favour, but now with the new points we have had almost a 600pt swing towards the marines.

The List I am running today is a combination of experimentation and restrictions due to not owning all the models I would want to run. With the Changes to marines, meaning I can stay in the devastator Doctrine all game, and the fact I get 2cp every time I kill a unit with a heavy weapon in the Devastator Doctrine with the codex warfare secondary, means I have packed my army with as many heavy weapons as possible.

I love the sternguard now I have been sitting on 15 of them for years and years now but finally, they are good again YAY! and boy are they good now! 100pts for 2 heavy weapons 3 combi-weapons and a combat weapon on the Sargent yes please!

I am excited about trying out my invictors again, they have so many heavy guns, and at 140pts they are too good not to take... their forward deploy rule means I can also use them to get angles on my opponent which I otherwise would struggle to.

I am trying out an impulsor... honestly I just haven't finished painting my Gladiator Reaper yet, but I think the Impulsor can do work, it has 12 s4, ap-1 d1 shots on it will a transport capacity of 6 its useful and can get me VP with the heavy guns... I think it has a place we will just have to see how well it does in the game. I am also running Aggressors, now I know not everyone likes them, especially for Iron hands because they do not carry heavy weapons BUT they do give me some combat punch which I need in this list, time will tell if they are a good investment for the points, but for tonight we are giving them a go.

You will also notice that my successor's choices might be a bit strange but there is method in the madness... +1 in combat on the charge will be really useful on my aggressors and thunder hammers... that's very common, But I have also gone for Long range Marksmen... that adds 3inches to my Heavy weapons... does not sound great but I have like 12 Multi-Melta's in the list... half of 3 inches is 1... meaning that my +2 damage goes from 12 inches to 13 inches! that means that it is much harder for people to screen me out and can catch people off guard... now of course this might not work at all but hey I'm giving it a go.

Conclusion

Well, there we have it, 2 great players even if I say so myself... 2 very interesting armies and 1 fabulous game... make sure you tune in at 7 to see what happens.
